Muziek, geluid en stilte in de geschiedenis en het heden van het Nederlandse kolonialisme

Van 29 t/m 31 oktober 2026 vindt Sounding Dutch Coloniality plaats bij ZOJazz Stage. Deze interdisciplinaire conferentie wordt georganiseerd binnen het onderzoeksproject IMPRODECO van de Universiteit Utrecht, in samenwerking met ZOJazz Stage en Need for Legacy.

De conferentie brengt onderzoekers, musici, kunstenaars en professionals uit de muziekindustrie samen om te onderzoeken welke rol muziek, geluid en stilte spelen in de geschiedenis en het heden van het Nederlandse kolonialisme en kolonialiteit.

Muziek als bron van geschiedenis en herinnering

Tijdens drie dagen wordt vanuit verschillende perspectieven gekeken naar de manieren waarop muziek en geluid verbonden zijn met koloniale machtsstructuren, verzet, identiteit en herinnering.

Onderwerpen die aan bod komen zijn onder andere de rol van muziek en geluid bij koloniale onderdrukking en antikoloniaal verzet, stilte als vorm van postkoloniaal geheugen en de verwevenheid van muziekinstrumenten met koloniale machtsstructuren.

Ook wordt aandacht besteed aan muziekgenres als dragers van (post)koloniale identiteiten en aan de rol van onderwijsinstellingen en archieven in het bewaren, vormen en doorgeven van muzikale geschiedenissen.

Optredens, interviews en lezingen

Sounding Dutch Coloniality is meer dan een academische conferentie. Het programma bestaat uit lezingen, gesprekken, interviews en liveoptredens, waarin wetenschappelijke kennis en artistieke perspectieven elkaar ontmoeten.

Het avondprogramma biedt concerten en interviews met musici die een belangrijke rol hebben gespeeld in de Nederlandse postkoloniale muziekgeschiedenis. Daarmee ontstaat ruimte om niet alleen over deze geschiedenis te spreken, maar deze ook te horen en te ervaren.

Gratis toegang

Deelname aan en registratie voor de conferentie is gratis. Koffie, thee en kleine versnaperingen zijn inbegrepen.

Bij de locatie is eten verkrijgbaar. Dit is niet inbegrepen bij de conferentieregistratie.

Locatie en bereikbaarheid

ZOJazz Stage ligt op ongeveer vijf minuten lopen van station Bijlmer ArenA. Het station is bereikbaar met de trein, metro en bus.

Vanaf Amsterdam Centraal Station is metro 54 de snelste verbinding naar Bijlmer ArenA. Vanaf Schiphol Airport rijdt er een rechtstreekse trein die er ongeveer 15 minuten over doet.

Parkeren

Wie met de auto komt, kan parkeren in de buurt van ZO Jazz Stage. De dichtstbijzijnde parkeergarages en parkeerlocaties zijn: P27 (ParkBee), P21 (Q-Park), P22 (Q-Park) en P23 (Q-Park).

Overnachten

In de omgeving van ZOJazz Stage zijn verschillende hotels te vinden, waaronder Hampton by Hilton, Courtyard by Marriott, easyHotel en Holiday Inn Express. Deze hotels bevinden zich op of rond de Arena Boulevard en zijn vanaf de locatie gemakkelijk bereikbaar.

Music, sound, and silence in the history and present of Dutch colonialism

Sounding Dutch Colonialitywill take place at ZOJazz Stage from October 29 to 31, 2026. This interdisciplinary conference is organized as part of the IMPRODECO research project at Utrecht University, in collaboration with ZOJazz Stage and Need for Legacy.The conference brings together researchers, musicians, artists, and music industry professionals to explore the roles that music, sound, and silence play in the history and present of Dutch colonialism and coloniality.

Music as a source of history and memory

Over the course of three days, the event will examine—from various perspectives—the ways in which music and sound are connected to colonial power structures, resistance, identity, and memory.Topics to be addressed include the role of music and sound in colonial oppression and anti-colonial resistance, silence as a form of postcolonial memory, and the entanglement of musical instruments with colonial power structures.Attention will also be given to music genres as bearers of (post)colonial identities and to the role of educational institutions and archives in preserving, shaping, and transmitting musical histories.

Performances, interviews, and lectures

Sounding Dutch Colonialityis more than just an academic conference. The program comprises lectures, conversations, interviews, and live performances, creating a space where scholarly knowledge and artistic perspectives meet.The evening program features concerts and interviews with musicians who have played a significant role in Dutch postcolonial music history. This creates an opportunity not only to discuss this history but also to hear and experience it.

Free admission

Participation in and registration for the conference are free of charge. Coffee, tea, and light refreshments are included. Food is available at the venue but is not included in the conference registration.

Getting there

ZOJazz Stage is located about a five-minute walk from Bijlmer ArenA station. The station is accessible by train, metro, and bus.From Amsterdam Central Station, metro line 54 offers the fastest connection to Bijlmer ArenA. A direct train runs from Schiphol Airport, taking approximately 15 minutes.ParkingIf you are arriving by car, parking is available near ZOJazz Stage. The nearest parking garages and lots are: P27 (ParkBee), P21 (Q-Park), P22 (Q-Park), and P23 (Q-Park).
